Bluebells

Went over with Ewan to plant some more hollies - about another dozen. The bluebells are just past their best with the leaves yellowing a bit. The odd primrose still out and the violets and anemones have finished.

The ash trees buds have still not burst. This photo is taken beneath the ash trees - full of light. You can see how much darker it is further in where there is more hornbeam.

Holly

Pa and I planted a dozen holly plants on the top of the bank by the road on the left hand end. Plants were between 3-12" high. The soil was only about an inch deep with solid clay after that. Not sure how well they will grow in that. Perhaps the bank was created by digging out a ditch hence the lack of soil.

However the "soak-away" ditch over the other side of the bank probably has some good soil in it if you dig it out. may be useful when planting other plants.

Anemones were coming out and lots of violets. A few bluebells here and there but in the surrounding countryside there are only out when in full sun positions at the moment.

Quite a few primroses.

March 17th 2009

Pa and I spent the morning trimming the back hedge in the wood and planting out up to 50 seedlings to fill some of the gaps. A beautiful warm spring day with the wild daffodils just beginning to come out. Pa also got a good harvest of hornbeam pea sticks for the vegetable patch at 70 Keymer Road.

Walking the wood

Did you ever have that session with the lady over the road to walk through the wood and identify what was there? I can't remember whether she suggested waiting until things were in leaf or not.

Love the picture of the anenomes!
